The Japanese American community left Bainbridge Island on March 30th, 1942, just a few months before the strawberry harvest. The Japanese American farmers needed stewards and their Filipino farmhands brought in the harvest, paid the taxes and saved the farms. The Filipino bachelors also introduced a new immigrant group, First Nation women from Canada, into the social mix. After the war, some of the bachelors traveled back to the Philippines and returned with brides. hrough it all the “Bayanihan spirit” where the community comes together and works for the common good, fed this community and everyone it touched.

A Day of Learning Tagalog in Collaboration with the Foundation for Philippine Progress Facilitated by Roger Rigor

This learning journey will start with the very basics: the alphabet. In literally flexing dormant “Tagalog muscles”, students will appreciate the transition from English to Tagalog. The course continues with accents, conjugation patterns in tenses and basic sentence structures, interrogative expressions and proper responses. Students will also appreciate the nuances of the language especially in some simple word expressions, or accents that change the context altogether. And finally, the course will touch upon the integration of Spanish and English into the language.
